Accent Walls In or Out?

I’m asked this question soooo often. Are accent walls in or out? Most designers say out.

But if you dig color, go for it! Just be intentional. In other words, don’t just slap your fav color up on the wall and walk away. It will look dull and boring!

Be purposeful about the color. A good rule of thumb is to repeat that same color in small, medium, and large measures.

For her large dose, this client chose a beautiful blue-green color from Sherwin Williams for her accent wall. She repeated it with a small dose in her accent pillows. For a medium dose, I would recommend a bench at the foot of the bed in the same color. Or perhaps a small round or oval rug in the same color in front of the foot of the bed, which would be larger than the pillows, but smaller than the wall. And yes you can layer a thin area rug over wall-to-wall carpeting. You’re welcome.
